WHO WE ARE
By Choice is an emergent NGO that empowers girls’ and women’s reproductive autonomy. We believe in the liberating power of comprehensive knowledge and the imperative of informed consent. We provide crucial, empirical information on the impacts of pregnancy and motherhood, and advocate for positive alternatives that support living an authentic and fulfilling life by one's own choice.
WHAT WE DO
Drawing from both existing studies and our original research, we are currently building an online knowledge hub that collects, organizes, and shares evidence-based information on pregnancy, motherhood, and the childfree lifestyle. All this, in an easily accessible and understandable way with the aim to reach a wide audience both online and offline. Our collection of knowledge will also be transformed into engaging workshop materials for various groups, and further shared across social media. By Choice cooperates with other feminist and social justice groups to better reach and support vulnerable women whose reproductive autonomy is in heightened need of protection.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT
Pregnancy and motherhood can significantly impact women’s physical, mental, economic, and social well-being. However, these risks are often downplayed or even intentionally concealed by pronatalist politics and patriarchal religious, social, and cultural norms. Women frequently face intense pressure to become mothers, which undermines their reproductive autonomy. This pressure can lead to unforeseen or unwanted consequences, leaving women to navigate these challenges without adequate support.
By Choice recognizes and brings attention to the overwhelming bias and pressure towards motherhood imposed by patriarchal society, which deprives women of true reproductive autonomy.
MEET THE TEAM
Zsófia Grunzó
founder & executive director
Zsófia holds degrees in philosophy, cultural anthropology, and intercultural psychology and education. Over the past 12 years, she has dedicated her time to volunteering and working for various social causes, including advocating for LGBTQ rights, supporting refugees, promoting human rights, and educating against antisemitism. Ultimately, Zsófia found her calling in the fight for a more just and equitable feminist future. She founded By Choice because she believes that true reproductive autonomy is the cornerstone of women's justice, freedom, and equality.
Krisztina Les
co-founder and program director
Krisztina is a social worker who also holds a Master's degree in Sociology. For more than seven years, she has been working with different NGOs specializing in supporting victims of domestic violence and advocating for access to safe abortion. Currently living in Hungary, a country with restrictive laws around women’s rights, she experiences firsthand how necessary it is to participate in a project like By Choice and offer women and girls a space free from the pressure of gender roles, where the word “choice” receives its true meaning.
